The only parts with the frame were two wheels, hubs, cogs and the handlebars. The frame had been stripped of parts in order to remove the old paint. And the other parts were lost over the course of a few moves. The original decision was to have a rideable bike and not a museum piece. This meant using some modern components, mainly in the gearing because this bike came with a rear four speed cogset. Such a limited gear selection would not have suited the new owner's riding style. The original parts that were not used or were removed were kept in case some future custodian would prefer to fully restore it. |
| The inside of the headtube was fairly well worn, which leads to the conclusion that the bike was bought used when it toured England for that one season. The wear and tear on the headtube was so noticeable that it's likely that the bike was hand built in the '40s. After the paint was sandblasted off the headtube was rebuilt. Other than that the frame was in perfect shape and did not need to be realigned on a jig (an alignment template). |
