This frame was originally built using lugs. They would have been pre-cut, and the shape would often identify their maker. Compare these joints to those found on modern bikes. In order to further emphasize the craftsmanship of this frame the edges of the lugs were highlighted in dark green paint so they stood out better against the yellow frame. On a site created by Oro Bike Shop of North Carolina you'll find some interesting examples of fine lug work made by Hetchins and another example of a finished product produced by Carlton Cycles. |
| Originally there were two pump pegs located on the downtube. You needed two because that's how pumps were designed at that time. Waterbottle cages at that time were put on with clamps and in this case probably on the seat tube. This bike has been converted to the modern convention of having a pump peg on the seat tube. And water bottle cage fittings (braze-ons) were added to the downtube. The pump was new and painted to match the frame. One end fit nicely in the peg and the other sat comfortably just above the bottom bracket by way of a plastic fitting. |
