After brunch on day one, we have a short day's ride to our first campground. There's not much climbing on this day and riders can take a side trip to the Gaelic College just outside of Baddeck. Riders dropped in this year and were able to catch a Gaelic language lesson in progress and hear a student piper. Bag piping is experiencing a renaissance in Cape Breton. This revival has encouraged popular song performers to incorporate the pipes into their works.
On day two we ride over what riders judged to be the most challenging climb of the trip, Smokey Mountain. It's six kilometres to the summit and once there you are greeted with a spectacular view and an equally spectacular descent. We then head over some steady hills through to Ingonish, a side trip to Neils Harbour and onto Dingwall where we are rewarded with a day off.
